Two of the most important factors in protecting yourself from getting or, recovering from the SARS-CoV-2 virus which creates the disease COVID-19 are: a healthy respiratory system and; a healthy immune system.

Amongst many other things, Qi Gong has been shown to help boost the immune system and increase oxygen delivery to the tissues of your body. Deep breathing, as discussed in my recent post, brings more oxygen into the lungs, leading to more oxygen in the blood and consequently, more oxygen delivered to each cell in the tissues of your body. This enhanced delivery improves the efficiency of cellular processes and creates balance throughout your body. Inhaling slowly and deeply stimulates your sympathetic nervous system which creates your stress “fight or flight” response by increasing heart rate, constricting blood vessels and increasing blood pressure. This system is essential in short-term, emergency situations but, is damaging if left on for prolonged periods like long-term stress and anxiety. Exhaling slowly and completely signals your parasympathetic nervous system to slow down the heart rate, decrease blood pressure, improve digestion, detoxify and maintain good kidney function and reproduction. A balance between the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems is essential for normal homeostasis (balance) in your body systems.

Your immune system is vital for health and longevity. It can be nourished and improved using Qi Gong, a healthy diet and, a good environment in terms of Feng Shui. This system is our defense which, if compromised, leads to blocks in our energy flow throughout the body.

Negative emotions creating stress, weaken our immune system. Stress can lead to insomnia, poor digestion, acidic, non-nutritious diet, infertility, decreased libido and increased toxins in the body. Weak immune systems can lead to allergies, autoimmune disease, diabetes, obesity, hypo- or hyper-thyroidism, increased infections and motor neurone disease such as Parkinsons, Myasthenia Gravis or Multiple Sclerosis.

A simple Qi Gong exercise which you can practice daily, involves bouncing your body. This simple but effective exercise grounds your energy in your lower torso, whilst boosting both your lymphatic and immune systems. It simultaneously helps realign the spine, balancing the body and relieves shoulder and back pain caused by prolonged seating in bad postural alignment.

Stand with your feet parallel, just over shoulder-width apart, bend your knees as you gently bounce your body up and down. Relax your torso and shoulders but keep your spine straight. Let your arms flop by your sides as you bounce. Do this for three minutes (one minute will suffice if you don’t have much time). Then, lift your arms above your head, let your hands go floppy and continue bouncing gently for another three minutes. Imagine a beautiful white light coming down through your head and spreading throughout your body and into the room around you. Focus on gentle deep breathing and imagine all your energy channels opening up. You have several important energy points in your hands and wrists which connect to your heart, lungs and reproductive organs. Bouncing helps to open these up and re-balance the body. Try this exercise every morning and evening to open your channels, realign your spine and boost your immune system. More to follow!
